EMEDEX Internships provide leadership training and skills building in international emergency medicine, public health, and globalhealth systems development.  This experience will benefit individuals planning careers in medicine, global health, nonprofit management, public sector development, and international relations. The internships are paid at a rate of ten dollars an hour. The commitments are detailed below.

Public Relations Intern (not available at this time)

Supervisors: Christina Bloem
Time Commitment: 3-5 hrs/week
Duration: 3-6 months

Objective:
 To support EMEDEX’s web and media presence through publishing press releases and progress uptdates online and in print, through maintaining and expanding the organization’s presence on social networking sites, and actively working to improve our visibility.

Overview: The EMEDEX public relations intern serves to expand awareness of the organization and its international projects.  Public awareness is built through: active and reactive presswork, publications produced in-house, websites, social media sites, magazine/journal and newspaper publications, TV and radio appearances, and other speaking events. The public relations intern will assist in all phases of the preparation of EMEDEX’s print and online publications. This is a hands-on position, offering a lot of practical experience and an opportunity to actively improve tools through which EMEDEX communicates its message to the public. The ideal candidate will contribute creatively to new and ongoing projects. A student with an interest in journalism, multimedia, publishing, non-profit communications, and/or international affairs would be best suited for this position.

Duties:

  • Writing for print and online publications
  • Maintaining EMEDEX website and social media sites updated
  • Proofread and edit documents to ensure content quality
  • Research photographs from international photo database for use in
    EMEDEX publications
  • Transcribing interviews for publications and website
  • Basic editing of audio and/or video files
  • Building slideshows for website and social networking sites
  • Administrative support to multimedia supervisors
  • Organization and upkeep of A/V equipment, print publications, and
    digital files
  • Others tasks as assigned

Required Skills:

  • Strong interest in communications or journalism
  • Strong interest in multimedia
  • Proficiency in writing and Internet research
  • Excellent attention to detail and proofreading ability
  • Experience in journalism or nonprofit communications preferred (Please provide examples of published writing and/or multimedia projects)
  • Working knowledge of Word and Excel
  • Diligent organizational skills

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with web design and Word Press
  • Skills in Photoshop, Adobe applications
  • French, Creole, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish and/or other language skills

Executive Intern (not available at this time)

Supervisor: Christina Bloem
Time Commitment: 3-5 hrs/week
Duration: 3-6 months

Objective:
 The President of EMEDEX works in conjunction with the Board of Directors to guarantee the overall functioning of the organization.  This includes procuring funding for active and future activities, oversight and management of current EMEDEX projects, development of new initiatives, coordinating meetings with the Board of Directors, and strategic planning.

Overview:
 To provide administrative support to the President, while providing practical learning experience and exposure to an applicant interested in international medicine and global public health work, NGO administration, and advocacy. This internship is ideal for anyone considering a career in international medicine, and particularly in the administration of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Duties:

  • Update and maintain EMEDEX website with news of ongoing projects (work with Multimedia Intern)
  • Provide logistical support to the President in preparation for quarterly Board of Directors meetings, including updates on current projects and future initiatives
  • Provide logistical support to the President in preparation for EMEDEX project meetings and other events
  • Provide administrative support to President as required
  • Conducting ongoing research related to health issues in countries where EMEDEX conducts current work or has planned future initiatives

Required Skills:

  • Genuine commitment to EMEDEX’s mission and a general understanding of international current events
  • Excellent administrative/logistical skills
  • Ability to work independently and with limited supervision
  • A working knowledge of MS Word and Excel
  • Excellent attention to detail and proofreading ability
  • Initiative and confidence to ask questions in a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to work independently on multiple tasks
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Grant Research Intern (not available at this time)

Supervisor: Christina Bloem
Time Commitment: 3-5 hrs/week
Duration: 3-6 months

Objective:
 To assist with grant research for funding of current/future EMEDEX projects.  The Grant Research Intern will learn valuable skills in grant research, grantwriting, funder relationship-building, and financial planning for nonprofit organizations.

Overview:
 The Grants Research Intern will be supporting the President and Project Managers in procuring funding for current and future projects. S/he will learn how an organization approaches and cultivates foundation and corporations in order to receive large donations. S/he will also have the opportunity, through working in the office, to learn about EMEDEX international programs. This internship is ideal for anyone considering a career in development, public affairs, and nonprofit administration.

Duties:

  • Create a grant and foundation database including active and prospective donors
  • Create an individual donor database
  • Create customized letters of inquiry and grant proposal outlines
  • Assist in grantwriting and grant application completion
  • Actively research new potential donors
  • Assist in cultivating donor relationships

Required Skills:

  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Excel, word processing, database)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • High standard of professionalism and strong interpersonal skills

Fundraising Intern  (not available at this time)

Supervisor: Bonnie Arquilla
Time Commitment: 3-5 hrs/week
Duration: 3-6 months

Objective:
 To assist with fundraising for current/future EMEDEX projects.  The Fundraising Intern will learn valuable skills in fundraising, funder relationship-building, financial planning for nonprofit organizations, and public relations.

Overview:
 The Fundraising Intern will be supporting the Project Managers in procuring funding for current and future projects through activities and events that divulge EMEDEX’s mission and advocate for the organization’s project objectives. S/he will also have the opportunity to learn valuable public relations skills, fundraising methods, and will become knowledgeable about EMEDEX international programs. This internship is ideal for anyone considering a career in development, fundraising, and nonprofit administration.

Duties:

  • Create a Fundraising Strategic Plan for the year
  • Develop fundraising ideas for donor campaigns and events
  • Assist with active fundraising efforts, including logistical support and event planning team coordination
  • Cultivate relationships with individual donors and sponsors

Required Skills:

  • Strong interest in fundraising
  • Experience in fundraising preferred (please provide examples of previous work)
  • Strong interest in public relations
  • Working knowledge of Word and Excel
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
